Ruth King Elementary Modular Addition

The Ruth King Elementary School expansion included the addition of 8 new classrooms, covering a total area of 9,700 square feet, to an operational elementary school. This project is designed to meet the growing needs of the Sooke school district by providing additional space for learning and collaboration.

The school district envisioned learning environments that were more than functional, they wanted vibrant, engaging spaces that support connection, creativity, and student curiosity. With a strict timeline to meet, the goal was to deliver modern, flexible classrooms that comply with Ministry of Education requirements.

Working on an active school site required careful coordination of logistics, access, and safety. Delivering a full-scale modular addition while minimizing disruption to day-to-day school activities and aligning with evolving code and performance standards was the top requirement.

The addition features a wide central corridor finished with wood slat ceilings that also serves as a collaborative project zone. Falkbuilt modular interiors provide layout flexibility, including operable walls between select classrooms and shared spaces. The roofing system combines sloped triple-layer EXO panels over classrooms, ensuring durability and energy efficiency.

A defining architectural feature is the building’s use of bold, site-specific colors and a lively exterior entryway that is flanked by two stunning colorful gable walls. Operable windows and curtain walls enhance natural daylight, ventilation, and connectivity throughout the building, contributing to a bright and energizing learning atmosphere.

This project for School District 62 (Sooke) was completed in close collaboration with StudioHuB Architects and a team of highly skilled consultants. Ruth King’s addition showcases EXO’s commitment to delivery high-quality, sustainable learning environments for BC schools.
